Happy New Year – good health and happiness in 2016!
The second quarter (first semester) is rapidly coming to a conclusion. Students enrolled in semester based courses will be completing end of semester projects and/or taking final examinations next week. Additionally, some of our students will be taking Regents exams – we wish all of our student’s great success on all upcoming assessments.
Please expect second quarter report cards to be posted on the Parent Portal in the weeks ahead (on/about February 5th). Please review report cards with your child where you can assess your child’s academic growth as well as commentary from your child’s teachers to best assist and guide you in working with your child at home. As always, we welcome you to schedule either cluster meetings with your child’s teachers through your child’s guidance counselor or feel free to either email or call your child’s subject specific teacher directly to schedule a meeting to review your child’s work, progress, achievement as well as seek direction and guidance to further support your child’s academic development. In the event you still need to develop an account to access the Parent Portal, please contact Mrs. Kollan or your child’s guidance counselor.
The second semester begins Monday, February 1st. Students and families are encouraged to log-into your Parent Portal account to review student schedules for the 2nd semester. In the event you wish to receive a hard copy of your child’s schedule please contact your child’s guidance counselor. A hard copy of second semester schedules will be provided to students on Friday, January 29th in homeroom.
Guidance counselors are currently pushing into classrooms to inform students about scheduling expectations for the 2016-2017 school year. We invite you to be part of the process by sitting with your child by reviewing with them course offerings and by following-up with your child’s respective guidance counselor. Programs of Study for middle level students (student’s currently in grades 6/7) and for high school students (student’s currently in grades 8-11) are posted on the building webpage for your reference – hard copies have been given to all students in their first period class a couple of weeks ago. If you wish to receive a hard copy, feel free to stop in the guidance office to receive a copy. As you will see in reviewing the respective Programs of Study, attempts have been made to include additional elective based courses; Please be informed that these courses will only be offered to students if such courses have sufficient student interest, can be supported by the respective instructional allocation within a department, complement the students schedule, as well as be supported through the 2016-2017 district budget. Additionally, further attempts will be made to share high school courses of study with Greenport High School – such decisions will be addressed as we move forward with the scheduling process.
We welcome Claire Benson as a new part-time aide working as a greeter at the main entrance and supervising students in the cafeteria as well as congratulate Stephanie Oliver for being approved as a full-time TA working with our ELL students.
On a daily basis there are exceptional things taking place in our classrooms (during and after school). In closing, we are here to support you and your child to best prepare them to meet and exceed graduation requirements and to prepare them for life-long learning beyond high school. Please email or call us if you have concerns or need any clarification pertaining to the overall development of your child. Please encourage your child to attend extra help and seek academic support from their teachers by meeting with them upon the conclusion of the school day. By forming a cohesive partnership, our students (your children) will be best prepared to meet and exceed our global expectations to achieve.

Mrs. Dooley, Ms. Foote, and Mrs. Johnson- (Common Core English 10)
At the onset of 2016, students in English 10 have been exploring the wild and wonderful world of genres through viewing film clips, reviewing summaries of novels, and finding biographical information about authors who write in that genre. Students have chosen a literary genre that interests them and have been spending extensive time exploring the many interesting aspects of it using the VRC and other suggested online sources. Students have also been refining their organizational skills by checking the research paper deadline calendar on a regular/daily basis on our Google Classroom. Other skills that students are learning during this project include, but are not limited to: developing index cards to prepare various types of parenthetical citations (quote, summary, paraphrase, and idea); revising their wordage to engage their reader from the onset of the paper, as well as reviewing and verifying credible sources that review both books and authors. We look forward to receiving the mysterious, dramatic, action/adventure. Sci-fi, romantic, documentary, horror and comedic final drafts before February break.
Congratulations to the following students who were selected to represent our school in the 2016 HMEA Music Festival. Students rehearsed for three days under the direction of guest conductors, alongside other top musicians from the North and South Forks. The event culminated in a final concert held at Southold High School (Middle School Festival) and Eastport South Manor High School (High School Festival).

Small Ensembles Fundraiser Concert
The Annual Small Ensembles fundraiser concert will be held on Tuesday, January 26th in the District Auditorium. Doors will open at 7pm for the annual Chinese Auction. The themed concert “Head to Toe” will begin at 7:30pm. Auction winners will be announced during the concert.

Family and Consumer Science
In the beginning of January, 7th graders in Home and Career Skills used their Chromebooks and worked on the website: http://www.choosemyplate.gov. Each student created a profile under the tabsfoodtracker and foodapedia to analyze their calorie intake, activity choices, and food group requirements. Students could also track food or beverage items that contained fat, oils, sugars. It was very evident in a bar graph chart the nutrients students needed to intake to meet their daily dietary requirements. They assessed their results by making a few recommendations on how they could improve their diet or lifestyle with more exercise and better meal choices.
In Culinary Arts I – It is finally winter and the students have been working on a soup and sauce unit. The students have mastered the skill of making a roux to build a foundation for a Bechamel sauce for their homemade macaroni and cheese. They have also prepared a homemade chicken noodle soup and lentil soup for the stock based soups. In the weeks ahead, students will be preparing a cream base soup.
There’s been a run on research in the library during this first month of 2016. The range of topics includes the taxonomy of marine creatures, Revolutionary War battles, the lives of the Presidents, bone disorders, literary genres and their best representative books, immigration through primary sources, and how to create and stick to personal budgets. Ask your favorite student to show you his/her favorite database from the VRC and/or to demonstrate his/her skills with EasyBib, an innovative bibliographi c manager.
