Spring is here! And, spring break is around the corner. Currently, students are meeting with their respective guidance counselors finalizing course requests for the 2015-2016 school year. Please expect for your child to share with you such requests and in the event you or your child wish to revise such selections, please schedule a meeting with your child’s guidance counselor for advisement.

The performance of the Addams Family will take place this weekend. Appreciation is extended to our students, parents, the Southold Community, the BOE and to our Superintendent for their support given to the Theatre Arts department in making this production a positive experience for our students. I wish all of our performers the best of luck in all performances and appreciate the hard work our talented students devoted to this production.

The annual Military Ball took place on Friday, March 13th. Similar to all years – the Cadets and their guests at the event looked great and all had a great time. Thank you to our NJROTC team for making this a great experience.

The Robotics Team is currently competing at RPI and will be competing at Hofstra University on March 27th – please come out and see our students in action and be introduced to the team’s robot. Appreciation is extended to our parents for their continued support and assistance in once again making this opportunity a reality for our students.

Come out to Founder’s Beach on Saturday, March 28th at noon to support our 7th grade students as they participate in a Polar Plunge to raise money for a local and global cause. For additional information pertaining to the Plunge, please contact Mrs. Dakis.

Students are expected to be in school daily. In the event students are absent, a parent (guardian) is expected to make contact with Mrs. Claudio, district attendance clerk, informing her with the reason for absence. As per our BOE attendance policy, students will be in jeopardy for loss of course credit if they accrue 12 or more absences for semester based courses / 24 or more absences for full year courses. Please reference the attendance policy or contact your child’s guidance counselor if you have questions. Even if a student is late with parental support, the lateness is still deemed as being not excused. For clarification, feel free to meet with your child’s guidance counselor.

As the warmer weather approaches, we request parents to review with their child our dress code expectation policy. Students are advised to dress appropriately for school daily. In the event students select to dress inappropriately, students will be requested to make contact with the home for a parent (guardian) to bring to school appropriate attire and/or will be provided with appropriate discipline if a pattern is observed.

Third quarter interim reports have been posted on the Parent Portal. As always, please review these reports to assess your child’s academic progress. If you have questions regarding your child’s overall achievement, I encourage you to contact your child’s guidance counselor as well as your child’s teachers. April 17th, the third quarter concludes with an expected release on The Parent Portal of third quarter report cards on/about April 24th.

6th Grade orientation for parents will be taking place on March 30th at 6pm in the district auditorium. Guidance Counselors will be sharing with parent’s related information pertaining to a 7th grade student’s schedule, after school opportunities and more. In the event parents are not available to attend, they are requested to contact the guidance office to either schedule a meeting with a counselor or request for information to be mailed home.

During the months of April through June, students in 7th and 8th grade will be taking State assessments in ELL (NYSELAT), ELA, mathematics, and science. A calendar of related testing dates has been posted on the building webpage for your reference.

June 2nd all students enrolled in Common Core Geometry will be taking the State Regents examination in Common Core Geometry. As of this date, the building will remain open for students in grades 8-12 to attend regularly scheduled classes (expect some displacement of classes/classrooms). Students that sit and take the Common Core Geometry Regents examination on June 2nd as per the NY State Education Department (SED) is allowing such students to sit for the Standard (2005) Geometry Regents examination scheduled for June 19th (which is encouraged). As per guidance provided by SED, the higher of the scores attained will be recorded on student transcripts. Students that are not present on June 2nd to take the Common Core Regents examination will have to register to take the August administration of the examination at a district offering summer school. If a student misses the administration of the June 2nd Regents examination, they will not be considered to sit for the June 19th administration of the Geometry Regents examination. Expect in the weeks ahead a more detailed letter addressed to parents of 9th/10th grade Regents students detailing expectations for June 2nd.

7th grade students along with 7th grade teachers are planning a full day fishing trip on June 2nd on the Captain Eddie B III (insured United Coast Guard approved vessel) out of Captree State Park. The experience will support learning in biology, geography, oceanography and mathematics as well as support the philosophy of our advisory initiative aligned with team building and an authentic venue of learning. Students will be provided with a field trip permission slip to return to Mrs. Dakis. In the event parents have questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Dakis or Ms. Cavallaro.

Coffee with the Principal has been rescheduled for April 1st at 9am in the Library Media Center. Members from the Robotics Team and DECA will be present to share with parents their achievements as well as a discussion pertaining to latest shifts in aspects of curriculum and more will be discussed.

As always, we welcome your suggestions and look forward to fostering a collaborative and meaningful relationship with parents/guardians to best support all students’ academic, social, and emotional development. Orchestra

Two Southold High School students were selected to perform with the prestigious Long Island String Festival Orchestras. Eleventh grade cellist Aidan Walker performed with the High School Orchestra and ninth grade bassist, Rebecca Dickerson performed with the Junior High Orchestra. The festival was held at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket Jan 31 and Feb 1-2.

With the seemingly endless harsh winter weather on everyone’s minds, students in Earth science investigated the characteristics and causes of our weather. Using weather instruments, they tracked daily changes in fronts and air pressure, measured relative humidity and dew point temperatures, and predicted cloud formation altitudes. Students examined the primary cause of the recent record low temperatures on the east coast (an unusual dip southward of the polar jet stream). Our junior meteorologists even observed the nearly infinite variety of individual snowflake patterns while learning how snowflakes form!

The middle school boy’s basketball teams coaches Peter Salerno & Jeffrey Ellis won the Eastern Long Island Basketball Officials Sportsmanship Award. The award is presented to the top sportsmanship team voted on by the officials. Coach Salerno & Ellis will be presented with the award at the official’s dinner banquet on March 27th.

Culinary Arts I students have been working on food demonstrations over the past couple of weeks.

The students have been busy making some homemade croutons to contribute to the Garden Committee fundraiser event the “Souper Bowl” on Sunday, March 29, 2015.

The 8th Grade Home and Career Skills students are working on Career Skills for the 21st Century.

ELL Department
John Myers, ELL teacher
On Wednesday, March 25th, the ESL class will be travelling into New York City to check out Wicked, The Musical. The trip is a culmination of two years of learning about the stories and characters created by American L. Frank Baum in his classic “The Wizard of Oz,” and further expanded upon by American contemporary author Winnie Holzman in her book “Wicked.” Before reading Baum’s book in the school year 2013-14, many of the English Language Learners had never even heard of this wonderful tale that’s an innate institution in our culture, and their enthusiasm for the story and its characters gave way to this years study of the script for the stage adaptation of Holzman’s alternative story. This will be the students’ first foray onto the Great White Way, and undoubtedly it will be an experience they’ll never forget.

Art Department

The Southold High School art students will be exhibiting their artwork at the Southold Public Library for the month of April. The Studio Art, Photography, and Drawing and Painting classes have been busy this year drawing self-portraits, ceramic creations, and making beautiful paintings in watercolor and acrylic paint. Please come to the art show and see the great talent and fantastic artwork our students have worked so hard on all year. We look forward to seeing you there.

On Wednesday March 18th, the Health Office, SADD and Mrs. Santiago participated in Kick Butts day. This annual event focused not only on quitting smoking but also not being a replacement by the tobacco company for those who have died from smoking. Students and staff joined in taking pictures and posting them to social media stating they support Kick Butts Day. Participants were entered in a drawing to win gift cards to Dunkin Donuts and Michelangelo’s.

English 11
Ms. Foote, Special Ed teacher
Mr. Stahl, Ms. Foote, and Mrs. Dougherty-Johnson worked with the English 11 classes on their research projects about The Roaring 1920s. One of the culminating projects for reading The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, had been planning and producing their own black and white silent movie. This popular assignment with the students included writing their own screenplay and learning film, sound, and editing techniques. Students accessed their research from the VRC (Virtual Reference Collection) as well as from the books in the library. They then used EasyBib to cite their online, print, and musical sources. Some of the topics researched this year included: historical sports figures, mafia mobsters, the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, Long Island Mansions and Castles, inventors & inventions, and how Long Island specifically was involved with prohibition, bootlegging and speakeasies.
