This newsletter will serve as the last newsletter for the 2013-2014 school year. I would like to thank all families for their continued support, assistance, and cooperation during the school year. Parents (guardians) play a huge role in the education of students that enter our classrooms. It is imperative to have open and continual venues to communicate with you to best support your child’s overall academic, emotional and social development.
As the school year comes to a close, I invite you to reflect upon your (as well as your child’s) overall experience during the 2013-2014 school year most specific to the programs we provide and preparedness for your child’s future courses of study. I encourage you, whether it be prior to the conclusion of the school year or certainly over the summer to share with me in person or if you wish through a phone call or email any concerns you may have and/or valuable upgrades / ideas / concepts for us to consider in order to make you and your child’s experience valuable and positive.
An off-campus evacuation drill has been planned for Friday, May 30th. As in the past we will plan to dismiss from the building during period 8 and walk to the Southold Presbyterian Church on Main Street. Once all students are in attendance, students will be released to board buses and depart from the church for their trip home. Please reference the parent letter that is posted on-line / sent home detailing the drill and if you have questions, feel free to contact the main office.
Before long, the end of the school year will be upon us. Please be mindful that the last day of instruction will take place on Monday, June 16th. June 17th we begin final / Regents examinations. A formalized testing schedule has been posted for families on our webpage and students will be provided with a hard copy to reference in the upcoming weeks. It is expected that all students are in attendance during such testing. The official conclusion of the 2013-2014 school year is June 27th with our High School graduation to follow on June 28th.
With the warm weather upon us, families are encouraged to review with their child the BOE Appropriate Dress Policy and building expectations. In the event you need a copy of this document as a reference, please contact the main office. Students that are not dressed in appropriate attire will be requested to make contact with their home to obtain appropriate attire. If a pattern exists, appropriate discipline will follow.
Appreciation is extended to members of our PTA for their continued support. We look forward to sustaining a collaborative bond for many years to come to further support student programs and essential items for instruction.
As the school year approaches yet another conclusion, on behalf of the instructional and non-instructional staff we wish you a safe, enjoyable, and relaxing summer vacation. We wish the graduates of 2014 the best of luck in their future endeavors!

1. Common Core Algebra (Grade 8 Accelerated and Grade 9)
On June 3rd all students enrolled in Common Core Algebra (Accelerated grade 8 and Regents grade 9) will be taking the State Regents examination in Common Core Algebra. The building will remain open for students in grades 7-12 to attend regularly scheduled classes (expect some displacement of classes/classrooms).
Students that sit and take the Common Core Algebra Regents examination on June 3rd as per the NY State Education Department (SED) is allowing such students to sit for the Integrated Algebra Regents examination scheduled for June 20th (which is encouraged). As per guidance provided by SED, the higher of the scores attained will be recorded on student transcripts.
Students that are not present on June 3rd to take the Common Core Regents examination will have to register to take the August administration of the examination at a district offering summer school. If a student misses the administration of the June 3rd Regents examination, they will not be considered to sit for the June 20th administration of the Integrated Algebra Regents examination. A letter detailing the above was sent to families a couple of weeks ago. In the event you wish to receive additional clarity, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s mathematics teacher or guidance counselor.
2. 7th Grade Field Trip – June 3rd
7th grade students along with 7th grade teachers are planning a full day fishing trip on June 3rd on the Captain Eddie B III (insured United Coast Guard approved vessel) out of Captree State Park. The experience will support learning in biology, geography, oceanography and mathematics as well as support the philosophy of our advisory initiative aligned with team building and an authentic venue of learning. Students have been provided with a field trip permission slip to return to Mrs. Dakis. This great opportunity has been supported through Arts-in-Ed funding. In the event parents have questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Dakis, Ms. Cavallaro, or Mr. McGunnigle.
3. Student Daily Attendance
Students are expected to be in school daily. In the event students are absent, a parent (guardian) is expected to make contact with Mrs. Claudio, district attendance clerk, informing her with the reason for absence. As per our BOE attendance policy, students will be in jeopardy for loss of course credit if they accrue 12 or more absences for semester based courses / 24 or more absences for full year courses. Please reference the attendance policy or contact your child’s guidance counselor if you have questions. Families also have the opportunity to view their child’s attendance daily through the Parent Portal.
Academic / Extra Curricula News
Ms. Bumble – Mathematics
The hard work of the accelerated 8th grade math group from school year 2012-2013 paid off. Three picnic tables were purchased through funds raised by a car wash held by Mrs. Dakis and Ms. Bumble, as well as, $200 dollars donated from SADD. The tables will be used as part of the outdoor classroom the Accelerated group designed in a math project. Thanks to all the students involved that helped make this happen.
Mr. Wesnofske – Technology
The Principles of Engineering classes along with the Design and Drawing for Production classes are constructing a shed. Building is truly evidence of learning. Through this shed project, students have learned about real architectural scaled drawings. They were able to apply their math skills when measuring and figuring out angles. Students have developed an understanding for a building code and why it is important to building a structure. This project was completely student driven and student centered. With this being said, some mistakes were made along the way, but the students learned from their mistakes and moved on. All and all, I think the project was a success and the shed will look great next to our district garden!
Also, our 7th graders who passed a boater exam with an 80 or better are getting their official boater’s certificate from the United States Power Squadrons. We are the only school on the North Fork that offers our students this opportunity. Congratulations to all the students who got their certificate!
Mrs. Sabatello – GSA Advisor
The Gay Straight Alliance of Southold is an organization that accepts and supports young adults who identify as GLBT. Although the divulging of sexual identity is not necessary to join the club. The members of the GSA decided to conduct a fundraiser this year in order to raise money to support the Long Island Community Fellowship and their good works in supporting and protecting those individuals who are HIV and AIDS positive.
“The Long Island Community Fellowship is made up of youth and adults, singles and couples, members of the GLBT community and the Allies that love and support us.” These people volunteer their time to reach out to those afflicted in the communities who need meal services, companionship, and daily assistance in their lives.
The Gay Straight Alliance of Southold was so moved to hear of LICF’s good work that they unanimously voted to donate 100% of the fundraiser proceeds to the organization with no thought of how the money could be used selfishly to benefit the group. It is this lesson in humanity and compassion which far exceeds classroom learning at the end of the day. The students of the GSA are answering to the empathy that they have in their hearts for those who are less fortunate in the surrounding communities. Ultimately, this service to others will forge a stronger character within each of those students.
Greetings from Germany! This year abroad has gone so fast—pretty soon, I’ll be right back in the library, dreaming up cool research projects, recommending great books, and showcasing all the amazing databases in the VRC. Before then, I hope everyone gets a good dose of high quality summer reading!

I hope everyone has had an enjoyable and productive school year. I have been spending a lot of time lately travelling to library schools and conferences in Germany and talking about what school libraries in the U.S. are all about. Interestingly, Germany’s school library system is still in its infancy, and there is a lot they can learn from the kinds of collaboration and inquiry that we do.
Wish I could be there for The Fault in Our Stars movie release (June 6!) and for The Giver (August 15)! Can’t wait to hear what you all think of them and about Divergent and Ender’s Game too….

Dr. Buono will be in the health office on the following days over the summer for sports physicals. If you would like to have a sports physical done with Dr. Buono, please call the office at 765-5400 ext. 330 as soon as possible to schedule your child’s physical.
If you plan to take your child to your private pediatrician for their physical, please download the health appraisal form found on the school website http://www.southoldufsd.com . This form must be completed by the pediatrician and returned to the health office prior to the start of the sports season.
Mr. Himmelmann, Mrs. Baumann and Mrs. Grathwohl – Music Department
On Wednesday, April 30 over 75 music students from Southold Junior-Senior High School participated in the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble festival at Mattituck High School. The students spent many weeks preparing graded solos, scales and sight reading. They performed in front of an adjudicator and were graded on their performances. Many of the students received excellent and outstanding ratings. Congratulations to all of the students involved.
On Friday, May 2, three Southold High School students participated in the NYSSMA All-State festival at Shoreham Wading River High School. Chorus students Natalie Hocker and Michaela Manno both received ratings of A+ from the judges. Aidan Walker received a perfect score of 100 for his cello performance. Congratulations to Aidan, Natalie and Michaela for their outstanding performances.
Ms. Rizzo – Family and Consumer Science
Senior, Dan Insogna has competed in three culinary competitions this year. He won first place in the USA Long Island Regional Culinary Arts Competition and this past month he won first place in the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Competition. He is enrolled in the BOCES Culinary Arts Program and is presently taking College Culinary Arts I at Southold. Dan has natural talent in the field of culinary and he enjoys creating delicious food dishes for others. He has such a strong work ethic and his plate presentations are outstanding. If he decides to enroll this fall in the Suffolk County Community College Culinary program he will receive a $4,000 scholarship toward his tuition. The competitions have been very intense this year and he enjoys the challenge they present him with as he competes with other culinary students across Long Island.
Mrs. Williams – Business
Jamie Molnar placed 2nd place in the stock market game. Jamie began the game with a $100,000 investment. Jamie purchased Cabellas, Buffalo Wild Wings, Columbia Sportswear Company and Michael Kors. She made a 14% return on Columbia Sportswear and a 14.94% on Michael Kors. Imagine if this was real? Overall, her portfolio ended up with a gain of $9.91%.
The students in Computer Skills for the 21st Century all learned about investing in the Stock Market and even though it may be a gamble, the market returns a higher rate of return than any bank. It was wonderful watching the students run into class each day and checking their portfolios. Southold has won at least 10 times in the last 20 years that we have been playing the stock market game. My students enter one game in the fall and then another in spring.
Jamie placed 2nd out of over 1167 students in NY. Her final balance in her portfolio was $107,502.41 which means she made over $7500 in just 15 weeks. There will be an awards ceremony at Molloy College in June.
