Parent Newsletter for February 2014

I hope everyone is well and having a nice mid-winter vacation.

The second semester is in full swing. Second quarter report cards have been mailed home – please carefully review your child’s report card (both comments and grades) and contact your child’s subject specific teacher and/or guidance counselor if you have any questions or concerns. As a reminder, interim reports and quarterly report cards can be accessed through our Parent Portal which is part of our School Management System – Eschool. In the event you need to gain Parent Portal access, please contact Mr. Ryan Case, Director of Educational Technology. If you prefer a hard copy of such reports, please contact your child’s guidance counselor who will provide you with the essential information.

Mr. Crimi and Ms. Cavallaro have completed meeting with students in their respective social studies classes informing students of the 2014-2015 course offerings and related scheduling process for the 2014-2015 school year. Prior to meeting with students, all students were provided with a Middle School Program of Study (students presently in grades 6 and 7) or with a High School Program of Study (students presently in grades 8-11) to assist and guide them (and parents) in making course selections for the 2014-2015 school year. Both Programs of Study can also be reviewed on our web-page as well as on the guidance web-page for reference. Please carefully review with your child all course opportunities and if you have questions or need clarification, please contact either Mr. Crimi or Ms. Cavallaro. Please be mindful that elective based and encore areas of study course opportunities might be modified pending interest/enrollment and/or budgetary constraints.

Congratulations to senior Gary Prieto who has received a Certificate of Merit as he has advanced to Finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program of 2014. This recognition is awarded to Gary as he has demonstrated distinguished performance for present and future academic accomplishments.

On a monthly basis we recognize Students of the Month in respective subject areas. Commentary is given by respective teachers in support of honoring select students for their achievement. Recognition is shared with our students monthly through the morning announcements. Certificates are presented where students are requested to take such recognition home to share with their families. Students are also recognized for their academic achievement (honor roll and high honor roll), Random Acts of Kindness, and sportsmanship on a quarterly basis. We are extremely proud of our students and all their accomplishments. It is our intention not just to recognize a small percentage of our student body, but rather to recognize all students. We encourage parents (and guardians) to continually monitor your child’s academic achievement and to check-in with your child on a daily basis. Please be mindful, that your child’s teachers are here to support you and your child’s academic, social, and emotional development. If you have questions or concerns please call, schedule a conference, or send an email to your child’s teachers and guidance counselor to best assess your child’s development.

Continued and on-going professional development has been provided to teachers in Common Core State Learning Standards (with a deep focus on ELA, mathematics, science and instructional best practices). New teachers continue to have the opportunity to work with Dr. Nancy Doda (independently) with a focus this year on instructional best practices, Common Core expectations and middle school instructional techniques. Teachers in mathematics will be working with Larry Farrell and teachers in science will continue their learning with Scott McMullen.

On Tuesday, April 1st at 9:00am we will host Coffee with the Principal. This forum will take place in the library where we will showcase student extra curricula achievement in DECA and Robotics along with discussing new and existing NY State Education Department academic shifts/expectations.

As school is currently closed for winter break, I hope you are having a safe and enjoyable vacation.

The menu consisted of Chicken Cordon Bleu, red roasted potatoes with rosemary, green style spinach salad, egg noodles, fresh steamed spinach, baked zucchini pasta dish, Swedish meatballs, crab vegetable dip, and spinach artichoke dip. The delicious part of the meal was the dessert choices of mini cheesecakes with a fresh raspberry sauce, and molten chocolate lava cakes.
