William R. Galati, Principal
To welcome in the holiday season, our music and art department conducted their annual winter concert and art show on Tuesday, December 10th (middle school) and Tuesday, December 17th (secondary school). Both concerts (and student art show) showcased a multitude of student talent and showcased our student’s artistic talents. As always, thank you for attending and for supporting our music and art program.
As in the past, Southold High School will not be conducting a formalized testing week at the conclusion of the first semester. All semester based courses will conclude their course of study with in-class final examinations or with an authentic project (assessment/project due dates will be determined by the instructor to the course of study). A letter posted on the Parent Portal and building webpage identifying Regents/RCT January 2014 dates/times and expectations will be forthcoming. In the interim, if you have any specific questions pertaining to January testing, please don’t hesitate to call/email your child’s teacher(s) or guidance counselor.
All middle level students (grades 7 and 8) took benchmark assessments in both ELA and mathematics over the last two weeks. Such testing is part of APPR mandates by the State Education Department. Results of such assessments will not be shared with students or families and does not have any impact on student quarterly grades. The assessment data will be used by our ELA and mathematics teachers to best support their instructional practices as we move forward with greater depth of integrating Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) and more into our daily instruction and preparing students to meet and exceed college and career readiness Standards. Furthermore, students that are enrolled in Common Core Algebra (accelerated grade 8 and grade 9 students) will be taking the NEW Common Core Algebra Regents examination on Tuesday, June 3rd as well as take the Standard Integrated Algebra Regents examination on June 20th. The higher of the scores received by students taking both Regents examinations will be recorded on student transcripts. As June testing approaches a more detailed memorandum will be provided to families outlining SED’s testing protocol and rationale for students taking two Algebra Regents examinations.
We wish Mrs. Dempsey good health and happiness as she retires from Southold Schools on December 20th and welcome Mrs. Krawczyk as our interim Library Media Specialist through June.
I invite you to join me for Coffee with the Principal – to have an informal discussion with me regarding our school, our students, and our latest initiatives to best prepare and support all students in their learning. I will be hosting this opportunity on Tuesday, January 7th at 9am in my office – all are welcome.
Over the past couple of months teachers have been provided with professional development from recognized educators (Dr. Nancy Doda, Scott McMullen, and Larry Farrell) in middle level instructional strategies and related shifts in the ELA, science, and mathematics curricula aligned with the new Common Core State Learning Standards (CCLS). This necessary and imperative professional development will continue in the months ahead as we provide essential professional development to teachers working within the Integrated Co-Taught learning environment.
Interim reports have been posted on the Parent Portal effective December 17th as of 3pm. As always, please review these reports with your child to best assess their overall achievement and progress in respective courses of study. In the event you desire clarification with comments on the reports, please contact your child’s teachers and guidance counselor.
Please remember that by forming a cohesive partnership our students (your children) will be best prepared to meet and exceed our global expectations to achieve.
On behalf of our instructional and non-instructional staff, best wishes for a safe and happy holiday with family and friends and for a healthy New Year.

Ms. Rizzo, Family and Consumer Science
Students in the College Level Culinary Arts I course just completed making hot appetizers. This year the students are documenting their delicious food items with pictures and Ms. Rizzo has posted the pictures on the teacher shared page on the district web site. During the past week we worked on a recipe for French Onion Soup just in time for the cold weather this season.
Seventh grade Home and Career Skills students have started their nutrition unit. We were given some delicious leafy greens from the school garden and we are sampling a spinach salad in class. Students have been using their chrome books with the choosemyplate.gov website.
Mrs. Williams, Business
Mentor Breakfast Peconic Landing – On October 20th twelfth grade students attended a mentor breakfast at Peconic Landing in Greenport. The students rotated to different tables and met with residents and business people from our local community to discuss college and future career choices. The students had a wonderful day. We would like to thank Connie Ellis and Peconic Landing for setting up such a rewarding morning for our students.
DECA – The Southold DECA club has 72 members this year. The students are studying for the competition that will take place on January 8, 2014 at Suffolk County Community College in Selden. Based on our results in the Regional Competition we will head to the State competition in Rochester in March. Wish us Luck.
Stock Market Game – Every business education class participated in the Stock Market game where each student was given $100,000 to invest in the stock market. Unfortunately, we did not place in the top two like we have done many times in the past but we had students come in the top 3% of all the schools on Long Island. It was a pleasure to see the students rushing into the classroom to check their portfolios each day.
Ms. Cavallaro, Guidance
On Tuesday, December 10th, Suffolk County Community College conducted on-site admissions in the Guidance Office. Through this event, our seniors had the opportunity to sit down individually with a college admissions counselor and walk through the admissions process. Students learned about financial aid, scholarships, honors program requirements, placement testing and select a program of study.
